Free Genealogy Apps for iPad links to the
top fourteen genealogy mobile applications. Then let’s take a look at some other ways to find apps to help your research.

Two caveats: things move fast in this category and “free” usually means free to download but accessing content could cost you.

For reviews of apps, try appappeal.com. Their list of top 14 genealogy apps is provided in the table below. While their reviews provide a lot of information, I think perhaps appappeal.com is a bit confused about the difference between subscription databases and genealogy apps.

Only Ancestry, My Heritage, and Geni in their list actually offer dedicated free genealogy apps for iPads and iPhones. Fold3 works differently: “There is no need to download an ‘app’ from an App Store, simply visit Fold3 from your web browser and we format it for you device from there.” These four apps are growing in sophistication from their origins as tree-viewers.

I still think your best bet is to download the apps for the databases you subscribe to, plus the app for the family tree software you use. But that’s another post!

One of my favorites is Genealogy Search by MooseRoots [defunct]

http://apple.co/2oaZd3r

This free MooseRoots app provides over 1 billion free genealogical records, but its greatest strength lies in supporting information to provide context about your ancestors’ lives. Depending on the type of record and details available, MooseRoots also delivers information about historical trends, demographics, locations where your ancestors lived, and a blog reader.

Free Genealogy Apps for iPad

Other research apps for genealogy and tips and tricks for your Apple products are included in my latest guide, Using Macs and iPads for Genealogy. It helps you choose, organize, and use applications for your family history research and learn how to master the great features of Macs, iPads, and iPhones to streamline your research and find new ancestors.
And that’s it for free genealogy apps for iPad.
