Relationship Charts

This month’s issue of First Friday Genealogy newsletter offers a smörgåsbord of relationship charts, including one that helps your DNA research. You can use these when you’re away from your family tree software (that conveniently calculates relationships for you).

The chart featured above is from, a now sadly defunct genealogy site. It was designed and copyrighted by Alice J. Ramsay. I like this one because her graphics provide a clear visual representation to answer the sometimes thorny questions of how generations removed.

And now, when the post-dinner topic to turns to family relationships (was Aunt Hedda the first cousin twice removed or once removed of Grandpa Lars?), you can settle the debate. And that leaves more time for a post-feast nap, doesn’t it?
